Utility Assistance

The utility assistance program is a one-time assistance program that helps low income individuals and families with utility payment assistance. Unfortunately funds are limited and are given to us in periodic grants. Therefore people are assisted on a first call basis.  

An appointment is necessary. Utility appointments are made in the order they are received, call (517) 484-4424 to make an appointment for Citadel Corps or (517) 394-6945 for South Corps .

The Salvation Army provides assistance with utility bills for households that have received a shut-off notice. People seeking utility assistance must meet the following criteria.

  • A current picture ID for yourself and/or the spouse whose name is on the utility bill
  • Utility bill in your name (Does not need to be the shut off notice, but you must have a bill)
  • A DHS decision notice is not required.
  • Social Security numbers for all who are in the home
  • Verification of ALL income coming into the home 
  • Lease if available

Utility funding guidelines change from year to year.  Please call the Family Services Department to see if you are eligible for this assistance.

With a grant from the State of Michigan, partnerships with Consumers Energy, DTE Energy, and Michigan Gas Utilities as well as donations from individuals and other corporations we are able to offer various utility budget assistance programs.

CARE: Consumers Energy is helping qualified customers afford and better manage their monthly energy costs with the CARE Program. CARE customers receive a 40% discount on their Consumers Energy bill until September 2015 so long as participants make on-time monthly payments toward a more affordable bill.

Detroit Energy LSP: Low Income Self-Sufficiency Plan (LSP) is a low affordable payment plan for eligible low income families. This program allows you to make affordable monthly payments based on your income. The remaining portion of your bill is paid monthly with your energy assistance funds.
